Hatha yoga and Kundalini yoga provide a wide array of tools to detox the body on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Yoga postures (asanas) are used to support the body in eliminating toxins that are build up through the course of everyday life in the body digestive, endocrine and lymphatic system.
Specific postures are used to increase blood circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system and help the liver work optimally to cleanse the organism. Along with the postures (asanas), yoga is offering also different tools that we can use for cleansing purposes like certain Kundalini Yoga Kriyas, pranayama technics, fasts and yogic diets.
The best detoxing Hatha yoga flow postures are those that involve twists and inversions. Twists are helping to move particles trapped in the colon, improve digestion and promote toxin elimination whilst inversions transport new blood to the liver and kidneys and as a result, detoxify the organism.
Whether you have been on a Fridge to Couch pilgrimage lately, or you just feel a need to detox your body for the season shift or after taking medication these simple yoga poses can help you on that mission. They will boost your strength and flexibility while improving your digestion and toxin elimination from your body. You can practice them one by one or create a little sequence. You may also be familiar with some of them as they are often taught in online yoga courses by yoga teachers and yoga instructors who have YTT certificates. Whether you are new to these poses or youโre an experienced yogi, these poses are all great detoxes!
During a detox period, practicing Hatha yoga or Kundalini yoga once a day is highly recommended, even if the practice is short. One of the most important aspects of yoga is focusing on your breathing during your practice, as it helps release toxins from the body.
1. Downward Facing Dog
Being in an inverted posture your heart is above your head. Inversions are highly beneficial to our bodies in so many different ways, but are sometimes hard to access if we are new to the practice. Downward Facing Dog is a great pose to get your blood circulating and decrease stagnation, sending fresh blood and lymphatic fluid throughout your entire body. Inversions are encouraging blood to circulate in a different direction and rinse out lymph nodes.
2. Seated twist
Itโs common to equate twisting postures with detoxing. Any sort of compression and gentle movement in the torso definitely helps to get things moving in the digestive system. The more we help our digestive system move waste and toxins through the intestines, the better our detoxing.
3. The boat pose
The boat pose strengthens and tones your abdomen, hip flexors, and spine. It also stimulates the kidneys, thyroid, and intestines which can help relieve stress and improve your digestion.
4. Twisted Prayer Lunge
Twisted Prayer Lunge strengthens your lower back, increases flexibility, improves posture, and releases tension in the neck and shoulders. It also releases toxic anxiety and stray thoughts, and makes lots of room for more positive energy.
5. Standing Forward Fold
Meant to gently massage and stimulate the inner organs, this pose calms the brain, relieves depression, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, menstrual discomfort, stimulates the liver and kidneys, improves digestion, stretches the spine, shoulders, hamstrings and groins.
6. Shoulder Stand
Inverted poses such as the shoulder stand help drain accumulated lymph fluid from the legs and upper body. This is a wonderful pose to do at the end of a practice as all toxins that were released during the practice are then flushed toward the heart to be oxygenated and cleansed.
